Tree Felling - January 7, 2016

Todd and Luke arrived today to begin removing the two larger fir trees that had double tops, resulting in a dangerous sitation where rot begins at the fork and can lead to either top or large branches falling on the house or garage. The branches are large enough that the damage would be significant. As a result, the tree tops needed to come down.

We began by moving all the vehicles in including the bobcat and it's backhoe attachment, then laying tires and thick plywood on the driveway.

Luke climbed the first tree and secured several large branches so he could cut them and lower them to the ground. Once the way was clear, the top of the tree was removed. He then removed a section below the fork to ensure good wood. What remains is a very tall totem pole.

After this, he climbed the second tree and repeated the process. It was more complex because the fork was lower and the two tops much higher than the first tree. As a result he had to remove each top separately. After the first top was removed, it was too dark to continue.

Here is a short video clip of the first tree top being felled.

Tree Felling - January 8, 2016

Today Todd and Luke returned to finish the removal of the two large fir trees. Only one top on the second tree remained to be removed, so Luke again climbed the tree and once all was safe, cut the top off.

All that remained was cutting the larger pieces into firewood and chipping the rest. After a general clean up, the job was completed.

Kudos to Todd and Luke of Flying Squirrel Tree Service for and excellent, safe job!

Here is a short video clip of the second tree's back fork being removed.

And here is a short movie (uploaded to youtube) showing more of the work on the second tree

The first two pictures show how rotten the fork in the first tree really was.

Tree Fall Cleanup - January 9, 2016

Today I started the day by firing up the bobcat and pushing over the dead and leaning spruce tree on the front lawn beside the driveway. It went over easily and pulled the root ball right out of the ground. After cutting off the branches and cutting the trunk into firewood, I attached a strap to the trunk and used the bobcat to completely remove the root ball from the yard. It's now sitting with the root ball from the large tree that fell and started this whole process. Of course I did not get any pictures of the spruce removal, just one after cleanup. Here's all that's left of the leaning spruce, with a before picture from December 2007...

The pictures today are of the overall shape of the yard. There are lots of small piles of firewood, plus some much larger pieces from the trunk of the first fallen tree. The pavement and root ball must be handled once it warms up, as well as filling in the hole and re-packing gravel under the corner of the shed.
